DivX

DivX is the name of an MPEG-4 compatible video codec developed by DivX Incorporation. This codec is constantly being further developed, it started with the DivX codec 3.1, currently there is already version 6.7 and a Full HD version that enables films to be encoded in a resolution of 1900 x 1080 has already been developed. The main advantage is that this codec allows you to compress movies to a much smaller data volume without sacrificing too much image quality. This is made possible by the so-called motion correction, not every single image is saved, but only the differences to the previous image. These are then saved in order to be able to decode the image again afterwards. The algorithm searches for pixels (image points) that have changed compared to the previous image and saves this change in movement using a vector. The pixels that have not changed, i.e. have not moved, are taken from the previous image. A disadvantage compared to the similarly functioning XviD codec is that the DivX codec is not open source and safe further development is therefore not guaranteed.
